John Barnes started his journey and career with AF Johnson & Co Pty Ltd back in 1943, as one of only five locksmiths employed by the company. While he did not begin as a qualified locksmith, his exceptional mechanical ability and strong work ethic enabled him to rapidly establish himself as one of the firm’s most respected locksmiths.
And so, in 1949, John Barnes established the first John Barnes business on the corner of Swanston and Little Lonsdale Streets, laying the foundation for what would become one of Melbourne’s longest-standing locksmith businesses.
Ever the entrepreneur, John Barnes strategically introduced the DeHavilland Jet Boat to Australia and was one of the first Victorian distributors of the famous Victor lawn mower.
By 1951, after working under John Barnes, Ron Roberts Sr. had shown the skills and ability to come on board as a business partner, and the pair developed a strong understanding of the direction they were heading. With the long standing support and strong relationships of local and iconic manufacturers, the business created one of the first Locksmith Store Fronts for the sale of door hardware and security products.
In 1974, Ron Roberts Sr. acquired total control of the John Barnes & Co Business in Victoria , and continued to grow the company through the following years.

In 1977, Ron Roberts Sr. recognised the importance of expanding the business to meet the growing needs of Melbourne’s residential, commercial and industrial sectors. This vision led to the establishment of the company’s East Bentleigh headquarters, creating a strong foundation for continued growth and innovation.Today, the East Bentleigh head office remains the heart of the John Barnes Name and is led by Ron Roberts Jr., who continues to build on the values and reputation established by previous generations.
Working alongside his two sons, Ronnie and Kane Roberts, the third generation of the Roberts family is committed to preserving the company’s proud heritage while embracing modern locksmithing, electronic security solutions and the evolving needs of its customers.
